Purebred Dog Breeds Guide - Finding The Perfect Match

I wrote this Dog Breed Guide to help you choose a dog breed from the multitude of purebred dog breeds out there that will hopefully match up with your family lifestyle. There are a number of decisions you will need to make prior to purchasing a puppy or dog.

Too many people go down the AKC Purebred Dog Breeds List, read a brief dog breed description, see a dog breed that looks good to them and then heads out to the closest pet shop to purchase a puppy, only to find out a few months later that they can't handle their new family member.

This method of choosing a dog from a dog breed list without doing some homework first is the major reason why so many unwanted dogs end up in dog shelters to be euthanized. Please read through this dog breed guide so that does not happen to you.

Before choosing a purebred dog breed from the AKC (American Kennel Club) dog breed list or out of a dog book, there are several factors you want to consider as well as a number of questions you must ask yourself. We have made a Purebred Dog Breed List that has far more information for you to research than even the American Kennel Clubs dog breed list.

First I would like to say, it does not matter if you are interested in a puppy from the miniature dog breeds, toy breed dogs, large dog breeds, rare dog breeds or even the most popular dog breeds, different breeds of dogs have different temperaments and requirements, so it is important that you choose one that will fit in with the way you live.

You must also be able to fulfill all of your new dogs requirements including house training, exercise, proper feeding, health needs, obedience training and most of all, love and attention.

Bringing home any new puppy regardless of the breed takes a great deal of planning as well as the thought that goes in to puppy proofing your house, One of the most important things you need to consider when choosing a dog breed is the size you of the dog.

Will it be one of the miniature dog breeds, the toy dog breeds, the large dog breeds or are you going to choose one of the rare dog breeds or most popular dog breeds regardless of the size. Dog breeds can weight as little as a 5 pound Chihuahua all the way up to a 200 pound Mastiff.

Far too many people spend too much time looking at the cute little puppy pictures or videos without taking into account what size that adorable little puppy will be when it is full grown. My advice to you would be to go to an all breed dog show if you can and spend some time with the full grown dogs. Watch them and talk to the breeders when they are not too busy in the show ring. You will be able to see just about every breed of dog that is on the AKC Purebred Dog Breed List at the all breed dog shows.

Whichever breed you choose, you need to take into account where you are living along with how much space you have. When choosing a purebred dog breed remember that the miniature dog breeds and toy dog breeds are more content with a lot less space and that the larger breeds of dogs require much more room to stretch their legs.

Of course you will need to take into consideration all of the other members of your family prior to making your choice. How will the new dog's temperament and size affect any senior citizens or children who may be a part of your household.

If any of your family members happen to be allergic to dogs then you may want to consider buying a dog breed like a Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog or Bichon Frise which rarely shed and are hypoallergenic. If you have young children, you may want to take into account that the miniature dog breeds and toy breed dogs are much more easily hurt and as children tend to be somewhat rough with them, it may be a better idea to consider a larger breed of dog for your family.

If you own a home in a deed restricted area or live in an apartment or condominium there may be size or even breed restrictions on the type of dog you can own.

Another thing to consider when choosing the right dog for you and your family is if you plan on leaving your dog home alone a lot during the day because of work and/or school requirements. If you do, then you should definitely consider choosing a breed of dog that can adapt to being left on its own rather than choosing a high maintenance dog breed that requires constant attention. A good quality dog training course can help here a lot.

A very important thing to consider when choosing the right dog breed is the amount of money you are willing to spend both initially and on an ongoing basis. Purebred dogs vary in cost depending on their breed, pedigree and lineage. Rare dog breeds almost always demand a higher price as do dogs with a pedigree filled with Champion and ROM (Register of Merit) titled sires and dams.

Also when choosing a dog breed, remember that certain dog breeds such as a Poodle or Miniature Schnauzer will require constant visits to the dog groomer unless you have the skills to groom them yourself. With that said, it would be a good idea to choose a breed of dog whose level of maintenance will best suit your budget as well as your lifestyle.

Now it is time to sum up this dog breed guide for you. When choosing a dog breed please remember to do a little research first. Start by researching our dog breed list so you can see all of the different types of breeds available as well as familiarizing yourself with each breeds possible pros and cons. By doing some comparisons first, you will be able to make a more informed decision when it comes to choosing the right dog breed for you and your family.

When choosing a purebred dog breed for you and your family, remember that it is always best to carefully plan prior to purchasing a dog. The dog you choose will be an addition to your family that hopefully will be with you for ten years or more. Thus, with some careful planning you can ensure that both you and your new furry family member can live together happily for a very long time.

My final thoughts for this purebred dog breed guide. Please promise to never, ever buy a puppy from a pet store or puppy mill. I say pet stores because that is where they get their puppies from and they are the ones who are keeping the puppy mills in business. Dogs in puppy mills live in the most horrific and disgusting conditions imaginable. Although the ASPCA and police close them down here and there, it is not enough. The only way we can make a real impact is by refusing to buy puppies from local pet stores. Instead, please buy from a reputable dog breeder.

To find a good dog breeder, go to a AKC sanctioned dog show or visit the American Kennel Clubs website. Not only will you be helping to close down the puppy mills, but you will also be getting a much better dog for your family. Plus, when you buy from a dog breeder, any question or concern you may have about your dog will be happily answered. When you buy from a reputable dog breeder, you are not only buying a puppy, you are also buying a wellspring of knowledge. Their love for their puppies don't end once they are sold, it is for life!
