Far too often owners become frustrated because their dogs do not seem to be taking to the skills they are trying to teach. It is important to realize that it may not be the dog at fault here and that instead you just may be teaching them wrong. It can be hard to determine which dog training tips are effective and will actually work from those that are just a myth. These are a few examples of dog training tips that will work effectively.
Dog Training Tip - Teaching Your Dog To Sit
Telling your dog to “Sit” is one of the most basic and yet important commands a dog should learn. This way you can tell them to sit when people are coming into your home and visiting you or when you are at the vet trying to keep them calm. Of all the dog training tips on teaching a dog to sit the best is to begin with the dog standing.
The best way to train your dog to sit is with the use of a short leash and choke collar. With your dog on your left side, gently pull up on the leash while using your left hand to push down on your dog’s hind end. Make sure you say the ‘sit’ command with authority one time before you show him what you want by pulling up on the leash, etc. Remember to praise your dog or reward him with a treat right after he does what you ask. In case your dog is being stubborn, give the leash and choke collar a quick, sharp pull to get his attention. Always make sure your dog’s choke collar is put on correctly.
Dog Training Tip - The Proper Way To Use A Dog Choke Collar
A dog’s choke collar goes by several names including: choke collar, choke chain, training collar, correction collar and slip collar. The best and only way as far as I’m concerned to put on a dog’s choke collar is to hold it in front of your dog so it looks like a horizontal 'P', with loop of the 'P' facing down. The bottom of the ‘P’ is held in your right hand while the loop of the ‘P’ is held in your left hand. Your dog should be standing on your left side looking forward. Now slip the choke collar over your dog’s head and attach the leash.
The leash should be attached to the ring that does not have the choke collar sliding through it. When placed on your dog properly, pulling on the leash will cause the collar to tighten quite easily. When you relax the leash, the collar will loosen.
When placed on your dog in an incorrect manner, you will see the links of the choke collar go from the leash through the other ring and then underneath your dog's neck. If placed incorrectly, your dog’s collar will not always loosen up automatically when you pull on the leash thus causing your dog to choke.
Injuries to dogs can sometimes occur when a choke chain is placed on the dog incorrectly or when used improperly. When using a choke collar on your dog, make sure to use short, sharp pulls when a correction is needed. Never keep the chain pulled taught for any length of time and keep the collar on the top part of your dog‘s neck, just behind the ears. Steel choke chains or collars work much better than the nylons ones as they tend not to loosen up every time.
If your puppy or dog continues to pull on the leash or lead even while wearing a choke collar, you may want to consider using either a dog’s pinch/prong collar or a halter-type collar. If you have a very small dog or if your dog has any kind of respiratory problem, I would not recommend using any kind of choke chain.
Dog Training Tip - Using Rewards When Training Your Dog
The reason it is best to use repetitive commands and rewards when training your dog is because it will help force your dog to remember and associate the command with the proper action.
When rewarding your dog with high praise or a treat for doing what you commanded, make sure the reward is given the instant your dog does what is asked of him/her. If you wait even just a few moments too late and your dog is going to be confused because they won’t know what you are rewarding them for. During training, your dog may seem confused at first, but with a lot of patience and practice you will teach them what the reward means and that they are being rewarded every time they do what they are being told correctly.
Dog Training Tip - Housebreaking Puppy Training
When it comes to toilet training puppies and dogs, it is a good idea to wait until the puppy is over six months old which is when they can fully control their bowels. If they do have an accident in the house you need to let them know immediately that they were wrong. Sticking your dog’s face in it and/or yelling at them are not actions that are going to get you the desired results that you are looking for, so please make sure this is not how correct your dog after it has an accident.
The very best way to house train your puppy or dog both quickly and correctly is by crate training them. Also, keeping in constant communication with your dog is imperative if you want them to be properly house trained. It is important to catch your dog in the act of doing their business in your house prior to correcting them. Your dog will not understand why he is being corrected for something he did an hour ago.
When you do catch them, talk to them sternly as soon as they have an accident and take them outside so they understand that this is where they are supposed to be going to the bathroom. Creating a schedule for the dog is also very helpful. A schedule will teach them what times they eat and what times they are supposed to go out to do their business. In this way you will help your dog’s body to become accustomed to the schedule and they will be able to hold it in longer until they are let out to go.
Dog Training Tip - How To Stop Your Dog From Barking
If your dog has a problem with barking, one of the best dog training tips is to use a training aid such as a bark collar to deal with this problem. There are a couple of different anti-bark collars you can use to help stop your dog from barking.
The first and most widely used anti-bark collar gives your dog a slight shock every time they bark. They are somewhat controversial and there are questions about their effectiveness in stopping dogs from barking. We do not no if the shocks the collar emits when the dog barks simply startles the dog, thus stopping him from barking, or if the shock is truly painful to the dog and how painful. Personally, I am against using this kind of bark collar to stop dogs from barking.
The second type of anti-bark collar and one that I highly recommend is considered a lot more humane than the shock type bark collars. Whenever your dog barks, this bark collar sprays a mist of citronella in front of your dogs nose. It works because most dogs don't like the citronella scent and the hissing noise the collar makes when the citronella sprays startles them briefly. This is another great way to help stop your dog from barking.
Don’t use bark collars if:
Your dog barks because of separation anxiety.
Your dog is old and confused.
Your dog is blind.
Your dog is just plain crazy and has severe behavior problems.
Your dog has a very high pitched bark or yip.
In the case of the first four reasons the bark collars will not help stop your dog from barking and instead of the bark collar being used as a dog training aid as it was intended, they will end up as torture devices. Please contact your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer. Anti-Bark collars will not stop a dog with a high pitched bark or yip from barking because the collars cannot detect the high frequencies of your dogs bark.
Please contact your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer as they may have an alternative way for you to stop your dog from barking.
